On June 19th, a Jujutsu Kaisen was held at Cinema City Cinema Two (Chainsaw Man) for "Super Princess Kaguya!", an original anime that marks the first feature-length directorial work of Shingo Yamashita, who has worked on the opening sequences for popular anime such as the first season of "Jujutsu Kaisen" and "Chainsaw Man". Director Yamashita appeared on stage. The film began streaming as a "Netflix movie" on January 22nd, and due to its success, it began theatrical release on February 20th. In about four months since its release, it has grossed 2.5 billion yen and attracted over 1.2 million viewers, becoming an exceptionally long-running hit for a film that was first released on Netflix. Director Yamashita expressed his joy at the film's success, saying there were "so many things to be happy about," and revealed some behind-the-scenes details of its production.
Looking back on the production process, Director Yamashita said, "What I remember most is the time we were making it." He continued, "There was a deadline, and when the rushes came together and I thought, 'I can't let this go as is,' I remember going back to the office and working on the faces in the software. I just kept doing that over and over. I was saying things like, 'I can't ruin Kaguya's face,' and 'My Kaguya...!' and I was crying while I was doing it."
The event also featured Yuko Natsuyoshi, who plays Kaguya, and Saori Hayami, who plays Tsukimi Yachiyo. It was also announced that a special format version of the film will be screened starting September 18th. In addition to MX4D and 4DX, the film will be shown in three-screen SCREENX, ULTRA 4DX (a fusion of SCREENX and 4DX), and Dolby Atmos. The regular version will also be screened again. The film's run ended on June 18th in most theaters, and new developments have been announced.
"Super Princess Kaguya!" is a "musical anime" based on the classic "Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," in which 17-year-old high school girl Iroha Sakayori, who is juggling part-time jobs and schoolwork, encounters Kaguya, who appears from a gaming utility pole that glows in seven colors. The anime was produced by Studio Colorido, known for "Penguin Highway," and Studio Chromato, led by director Yamashita. A host of talented Vocaloid producers, including ryo from "supercell," kz from "livetune," 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot, provided the music.
