Singer Mie Nakao, who will soon turn 80, will appear on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi) on May 21st at 1 p.m. Nakao, who made her debut as a singer at the age of 15, has had a long relationship with Kuroyanagi, with whom she has co-starred since then.
She says she continues her daily routine of doing radio calisthenics with her neighbors. In the spring, they all enjoyed cherry blossom viewing together. Recently, her perspective on physical fitness has changed a bit, and she has realized that it is dangerous to be overconfident and think "I can still do it," so she doesn't push herself too hard. That said, she has resumed practicing tap dancing to prepare for her next job.
A little while ago, she did a major decluttering of unwanted items and remade several dresses that were still wearable, transforming them into new dresses. The dresses were so luxurious that you'd forget they were originally 30 years old, and when they were displayed in the studio, Ms. Kuroyanagi was very interested. Ms. Nakao, who still maintains a figure that fits those 30-year-old dresses perfectly, also introduced a vintage makeup palette. Both items seem to symbolize Ms. Nakao's way of thinking, which is to cherish things and use them to the very end.
