A予告状 (notice of intent to steal) arrives at the Hosho Museum, which houses many works of art, from the Phantom Thieves, stating that they will steal a necklace called "Starlight Princess." The notice quickly becomes news, and Anna and her friends, having heard the name of the Phantom Thieves, also visit the museum. The Starlight Princess necklace, said to be worth over 2 billion yen, is protected by strict security and a case made of super-strong special glass.
While investigating the building with Mikuru, Anna is approached by Ruruka in the Starlight Princess exhibit room. However, Ruruka disappears after saying, "Good luck, great detective." As closing time passes and the announced time of 8 PM arrives, the lights in the building go out simultaneously. When the lights come back on by the emergency power supply, a card from the Phantom Thieves is found attached to the Starlight Princess case, with the message, "The contents have been swapped and it's a fake."
