The "Dragon Quest" series is an RPG where the player takes on the role of the protagonist and embarks on an epic adventure to defeat the Demon King who threatens the world. From "Dragon Quest," released for the Family Computer in 1986, to "Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age," released in 2017, the series has consistently maintained a classic RPG worldview, while each title has challenged itself to create new gameplay using technologies suited to the times, such as the adoption of 3D maps, the use of "StreetPass" functionality via wireless communication, online support, and cloud play.
In addition to I through XI, over 100 titles have been released, including the "Dragon Quest Monsters" series which specializes in monster training and battles, and the "Dragon Quest Heroes" series which is an action RPG where players can freely control characters with realistic graphics. The series has sold over 97 million copies worldwide in total through shipments and digital downloads.
