It has been announced that the theatrical films "Part 1: Beginnings" and "Part 2: Eternal," based on the popular anime "Puella Magi Madoka Magica," will be screened again in 192 theaters. It had already been decided that "Part 1: Beginnings" would be screened in Dolby Cinema versions in 10 theaters from July 10th and "Part 2: Eternal" from July 17th, but the screenings will now be expanded to include the regular versions as well.
It was also announced that "[New Edition] Rebellion Story," which had been announced for a revival screening, will be shown in 287 theaters for a limited two-week run starting August 14th.
"Puella Magi Madoka Magica" is an original anime series depicting the lives of magical girls burdened with harsh destinies, and the TV anime aired in 2011. Directed by Akiyuki Shinbo and produced by Shaft, it boasts a star-studded staff including Ume Aoki for character design, Gen Urobuchi for the script, and Yuki Kajiura for the music. While the visuals have a gentle, heartwarming style, its profound world setting and dramatic plot developments garnered it popularity.
The theatrical films "[Part 1] The Beginning" and "[Part 2] The Eternal," which were re-edited versions of the TV series, were released in 2012. "[New Edition] Rebellion," released in 2013, became the first theatrical film based on a late-night anime to surpass 2 billion yen in box office revenue. The TV anime "Magia Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story," based on a smartphone game, aired its first season from January to March 2020, its second season from August to September 2021, and its "Final Season" in April 2022.
The new theatrical film " Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgis Night," which is the "legitimate sequel" to "[New Edition] Rebellion Story," will be released on August 28th. The staff, including director Shinbo and screenwriter Gen Urobuchi, will be reuniting for the project.
