It was announced on April 17th that the manga "Pen, Handcuffs, and Common-Law Marriage," currently serialized in the manga magazine "Young Animal" (Hakusensha), will be adapted into a TV anime. The "romantic comedy x mystery" features the unlikely duo of Tsugumi Kuchinashi, a high school girl who communicates only through writing and doesn't speak a word, and Eiji Kirisame, a serious, dedicated middle-aged detective. The manga has sold over 400,000 copies. A promotional video using panels from the original manga has been released on YouTube. Further details about the anime will be announced in the future.
Original author Shinichi Sawaragi commented, "I thought it would be absolutely impossible to make an anime adaptation of this work because the heroine doesn't speak a single word. This is all thanks to everyone who supported me and wanted to see it animated. Thank you very much. I have no idea what it will be like, or if it will be okay without any lines, so I'm looking forward to it. Please look forward to seeing 'Pen and Handcuffs' animated!"
Gasuyama Tank, who is in charge of the artwork for the original manga, said, "Thank you so much for making 'Pen, Handcuffs and Common-Law Marriage' into an anime! To all the readers and the anime staff, thank you in advance! There are unique animation techniques and expressions that can't be done in manga, and it will be animated, with voices (?), background music, and a theme song, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it!"
