A new cut from the theatrical re-edit of the short anime "Galaxy Express Milky Subway," titled "Galaxy Express Milky Subway: Local Train to the Theater," has been released. It shows new characters Asami and Haga, who appear in the film, and Ryoko, who struggles alongside them, inside a police station. In the midst of an emergency situation in which a runaway express train is about to crash into the galaxy, Asami maintains a cool, unperturbed expression, Haga is rambling on passionately, and Ryoko is clearly showing signs of hardship.
Ahead of the theatrical release, famous people from all walks of life who are avid Milsub fans have been commenting. Gen Urobuchi of Nitroplus, known for works such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero, said, "Nothing is more distant than the past. The Showa era scenery of my youth is now so far away that it is impossible to reach. It is the same as the end of the galaxy. So, the logic goes, if it's the end of the galaxy, then it's okay to have a Showa era scenery. This is the sense of wonder that comes from thinking in reverse. The voices of the famous Candies would have traveled 45.9 light years by now and reached star 47 Ursa Major. I hope there is an Earth-like planet!"
Manga artist Murata Yusuke, known for the manga "Eyeshield 21" and "One Punch Man," commented, "It's a unique Kameyamaverse that exquisitely mixes grand space science fiction with nostalgic Showa-era motifs! The characters' interactions are so natural! It was so much fun from departure to destination. Personally, I love the duo of Kurt and Max. I can't help but look forward to seeing them get involved in another difficult case and put their skills to good use!"
"Galaxy Express Milky☆Subway" is a sequel to "Milky☆Highway," a short 3D animation released on YouTube in 2022 as a graduation project by Kameyama Yohei, who was a student at a video vocational school at the time. It was broadcast on television from July 2025 and also distributed on YouTube, where it has gained popularity, with the total number of views on the official YouTube channel exceeding 200 million. The re-edited theatrical version will re-edit all 12 episodes and add new parts. It will be released on February 6th.
