The illustration for the slipcase of the "Fushigi Yugi Blu-ray BOX," a Blu-ray disc (BD) box set of the anime "Fushigi Yugi," based on the popular manga by Yuu Watase, has been revealed. The original author, Watase, drew the characters, including Miaka Yuki, for the illustration. Approximately 30 years after the TV anime aired from April 1995 to March 1996, this marks the first time the series has been released as a BD box set.
Kae Araki, who voiced Miaka Yuki in the anime, commented, "Congratulations on the release of the 'Fushigi Yugi' Blu-ray! I've been secretly looking forward to the Blu-ray release. I'm so happy. Meeting this work and being able to play Miaka is a gift in my life. I have memories of each and every scene, and Miaka's feelings come back to me. I miss the voices of Tamahome and Yui, and the Seven Stars of Suzaku and Seiryu... Tamahome's family and older brother, there are so many more I could talk about. I want to jump back into the world of 'Fushigi Yugi' with everyone!"
Hikaru Midorikawa, who plays Tamahome, said, "Congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the TV anime broadcast. I can't believe it's been that long. I'm surprised. My fans may have heard this somewhere before, but for me, 'Fushigi Yugi' is still one of the top works I would recommend. As a voice actor, I found it very rewarding to express the difference between Tamahome and Sukunan Wei. And I'm so happy that a Blu-ray is being released at this time. I want to keep such a wonderful work in the best possible quality♪ I hope you will once again immerse yourselves in the world of 'Fushigi Yugi.' And I would love for you to pass it on to the next generation. I hope you will continue to love the work and the characters."
The Blu-ray box set will include all 52 episodes of the TV series and all 9 OVA (Original Video Animation) episodes in HD remastered format. It will be released on August 26th for 33,000 yen.
"Fushigi Yugi" is a manga that was serialized in "Shōjo Comic" (Shogakukan, now Sho-Comi) from 1992 to 1996. The story follows a protagonist who finds an ancient book, the Book of the Four Gods and Heaven, and is drawn into another world within the book. A sequel, "Genbu Kaiden," started in "Shōjo Comic Special Edition" (also by Shogakukan) in 2003, and later changed magazines, being serialized in "Monthly Flowers" until 2013. In 2015, "Byakko Ibun" was published in "Monthly Flowers," and in 2017, the serialization of "Byakko Senki" began in the same magazine.
The TV anime aired from April 1995 to March 1996. In 1996, a three-episode original video series, "Fushigi Yugi," featuring a completely original story not found in the original manga, was produced. From 1997 to 1998, a six-episode original video series, "Fushigi Yugi Part Two," was produced, covering volumes 14 to 18 of the original manga and revealing the past of the Seven Celestial Warriors.
