A sequel to the Netflix film "City Hunter," a live-action adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo's popular manga, titled "City Hunter 2," is in production and will be exclusively streamed worldwide on Netflix in 2027. Ryohei Suzuki will reprise his role as the protagonist, Ryo Saeba. The announcement was made on March 26th, Ryo Saeba's birthday.
The Netflix movie "City Hunter " was released on Netflix in 2024 and became popular worldwide. In addition to Suzuki, the sequel will also feature Misato Morita Kaori Makimura , and Kimura Fumino as Fumino Kimura, the beautiful detective who has a complicated relationship with Ryo.
Suzuki commented, "We are pleased to announce that the production of ' City Hunter 2' has been decided. It is thanks to everyone's love and support for the previous work that we are able to deliver this new film to you. Thank you so much. Once again, we are taking on the responsibility of working on the original work that is so important to Mr. Tsukasa Hojo and to all the fans, and we are approaching the filming with a strong sense of tension and determination."
"The previous film depicted the 'beginning story' of Ryo and Kaori. In this sequel, we will deliver what could be called 'The City Hunter,' 'the most City Hunter-like City Hunter.' We want to create a work that will allow both long-time fans and those who are not yet familiar with City Hunter to fully experience the charm of the original. Please look forward to it," he said.
Original author Hojo commented, "Some information had already leaked out, so some of you may be thinking, 'Why now?' (laughs), but I am truly relieved that we can finally officially announce it to everyone. I recently had the opportunity to observe the filming, and I was overwhelmed by the extraordinary enthusiasm of Ryohei Suzuki and the director. Above all, Ryohei's physique is incredibly toned, and I could feel his determination for every aspect of the project. I believe it will be a wonderful film filled with the passion of the production team. I myself am eagerly awaiting its completion."
Keiichiro Shiraki will take over as director from Yuichi Sato. Director Shiraki, who is known for his fast-paced direction and tense action scenes, said, "I was obsessed with ' City Hunter' as a boy through the manga and anime. More than happiness, I feel the pressure and difficulty of working on such a great work. How can I realize it in the Reiwa era without destroying the world of the original work? It is truly a matter of threading a needle."
"City Hunter" began serialization in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha) in 1985, and became popular when it was adapted into a TV anime series that aired from 1987 to 1999. In 2018, a live-action film, "City Hunter : The Movie - The Most Fragrant Mission in History," was released in France. In 2019, the first animated film in approximately 29 years, "City Hunter : Shinjuku Private Eyes," was released and became a hit, grossing over 1.5 billion yen at the box office. The cumulative circulation of the comic books exceeds 50 million copies.
