The Prime Original film "Angel Flight THE MOVIE" (directed by Horikirizono Kentaro), starring actress Yonekura Ryoko, will be available worldwide exclusively on Prime Video from February 13th. The film is positioned as a sequel to the moving human drama "Angel Flight: International Funeral Home Specialist," which was released on Prime Video in March 2023 and aired on NHK General TV from May last year. Actor Mukai Osamu, who plays Adachi Yukito, the boyfriend of protagonist Izawa Nami (Yonekura), commented on the "moving plot twist" by Furusawa Ryota, who is in charge of the screenplay for the drama, saying, "I was surprised to see that coming."
The film is based on the novel "Angel Flight: International Funeral Repatriation Specialist" by Ryoko Sasa, winner of the 10th Kaiko Takeshi Non-Fiction Award. It depicts the inspiring work of international funeral repatriation specialists, who transport the bodies of Japanese people who died overseas back to Japan and foreigners who died in Japan back to their home countries. Yonekura plays Izawa Nami, the powerful president of Angel Hearth, a small company with an office in Haneda Airport.
Screenwriter Furusawa won the Japan Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film "ALWAYS Sunset on Third Street" (2005). In the "Confidence Man JP" series, which depicts the deception of con artists, he has stunned audiences with its breathtaking drama, multiple twists and turns, and brilliant resolutions. In this film, the story progresses while touching on Nami's past, which was not revealed in the drama series, and information about the missing Yukito gradually comes to light. Furthermore, as Nami's subordinates each travel to various places and confront the body, their efforts come together at the end, resulting in a moving conclusion.
Regarding Furusawa's skillful depiction of the "moving resolution of the plot twists," Mukai said, "I think the script is very powerful in adapting the original work and the activities of the people who actually work there. In particular, as the film is an ensemble drama, it is packed with Furusawa's unique sense of humor, and I think the dialogue is truly excellent." He praised the film, saying, "Some of the lines really pierce your heart, while others will make you fall over, so it's a truly excellent resolution of the plot twists. At the end, the story comes together and a very moving moment awaits, so I think it's a wonderful balance."
The film begins when Nami, who works hard every day in the international repatriation of funerals, receives information that her boyfriend, Adachi Yukito, whose whereabouts were unknown eight years ago in an accident overseas, may still be alive in Mexico. Nami says she "doesn't want to know now," but at the orders of Chairman Kashiwagi Shiro (Endo Kenichi), she is ordered to fly to Mexico to repatriate a Japanese person who died there. During the Mexican festival "Day of the Dead," which welcomes the souls of the deceased, Nami is forced to confront her own and Yukito's past while busy with her repatriation duties.
While the story's past with Yukito is also depicted, the plot is gradually unravelled, and a shocking ending awaits... A moving story filled with laughter and tears, told alongside the struggles of Nami and the other employees, that you won't want to miss.
