Actress Haruka Ayase and Daigo of the comedy duo "Chidori" attended the official screening of their film "The Sheep in the Box" (directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, released on May 29), which is being screened in the competition section of the Cannes International Film Festival currently being held in France, on May 16 local time.
During the screening, there were many moments that elicited laughter and excitement from the audience, while at other times, some audience members were seen shedding tears. After the screening, the approximately 2,300 audience members gave a thunderous applause, and a standing ovation that lasted for about nine minutes.
After the official screening, Daigo smiled and said, "Of course, it was my first time, so I was very surprised. It was a great experience." Child actor Kuwagi Rimu replied, "Today is my birthday (I'm 10 years old), so I think I'm really 'lucky'," which drew laughter from the reporters.
Ayase commented, "During the screening, I noticed that the audience's reactions were different from those in Japan, like 'They laughed here,' which was very refreshing. It was really interesting to be able to experience that together with them." Director Kore-eda responded, "I was wondering how the people around me were watching, but I could tell that they were concentrating on the film until the end, which was a relief. I'm really happy that we were all able to come here again."
Regarding escorting Ayase on the red carpet, which he had identified as a challenge, Daigo reflected, "It was the first time I'd ever walked with her holding my hand like that. I was wondering if it looked too practiced, but I tried my best. If it looked awkward, then maybe it was." Ayase responded with a smile, "Daigo did it so diligently and properly, which I found a little amusing, but I was grateful."
