It has been revealed that actress Riho Yoshioka will star in the 10-episode drama series "Dangerous," which will air on NHK's "Drama 10" slot (NHK General, Tuesdays at 10 PM) starting in January 2027. Yoshioka, who will play Shigeko, the model for the protagonist of Junichiro Tanizaki's masterpiece "The Makioka Sisters," commented, "I've always wanted to experience Junichiro Tanizaki's works, but I never imagined I would get a role where I would be confronting Tanizaki himself..."
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Natsuo Kirino (published by Chuokoron Shinsha), which depicts the lives of Tanizaki and the women surrounding him. Yuri Nakamura plays Matsuko, Shigeko's older sister and Tanizaki's wife, and Joe Odagiri plays Tanizaki.
The story follows Shigeko (Yoshioka) and Matsuko (Nakamura), two sisters from a wealthy family in Osaka's Semba district, who are as contrasting as the moon and the sun. In 1927, the sisters meet Junichiro Tanizaki (Odagiri), a "dangerous man" who writes erotic novels. The two sisters end up dancing with Tanizaki in a dance hall, and there Shigeko becomes convinced that "he is the only person in the world who can see the real me"... The script is written by Ikue Nagata, who also wrote the NHK serial drama "Ranman" and the NHK Drama 10 "The Swallow Does Not Return".
◇Comment from Riho Yoshioka
A huge opportunity has come my way. I've always wanted to work with Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's works, but I never imagined I'd get a role where I'd be directly confronting Tanizaki himself...
We are currently making various preparations for the upcoming Kurakin event, and I am already confident that we will be able to present a world of Tanizaki that you have never seen before.
Get ready for a sensual, edgy, and dangerous world filled with sorrow, love, and hate.
◇Comment from Production Supervisor, Maiko Itagaki
It is an immense pleasure to be able to adapt Riho Yoshioka, and a talented staff.
Borrowing from the world of Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, a literary giant whom Japan proudly boasts, we will express the "dangerous ego that everyone harbors within their heart" as a bold form of entertainment that we feel is especially relevant now. Please look forward to it.
