93-year-old knitting artist Hiroko Ito will appear on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi), airing at 1 p.m. on June 30th.
She began knitting at the age of four, and during the wartime shortages, she would even unravel old sweaters and re-knit them, demonstrating that she never lost her passion. In high school, she learned European techniques and color theory from her teacher, and at the age of 20, she won the prestigious Princess Takamatsu Award at the National Knitting Competition.
Her skills are highly acclaimed, and four years ago she achieved the remarkable feat of having her work acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK. Ms. Kuroyanagi is captivated by the many beautiful, painterly pieces, such as a costume depicting London's Tower Bridge and an elaborate poppy dress that took a year to create. She also talks about the secret to her energy to continue knitting.
