Women don't need education," to which Rin pleaded, "Please let Tamaki go to a girls' school." However, Kamekichi retorted, "That's useless. She's going to be married off anyway," and began bothering Tamaki, who was sleeping.
When Rin tries to stop him, Kamekichi becomes enraged and starts to rampage. "You think you can get away with this?!" Kamekichi shouts angrily, throwing a teacup, which hits a lantern that falls over and sets the shoji screen ablaze. The flames spread rapidly, and Kamekichi cries out "Mom!" and runs away with his mother, Sada (played by Negishi Kie), leaving Rin and Tama behind. Rin carries Tama on her back and runs back to her family home, the Ichinose house.
