It has been announced that a 4K digital remaster of Studio Ghibli's animated film "Kiki's Delivery Service" (directed by Hayao Miyazaki) will be screened in IMAX theaters nationwide starting June 19th. Visuals for the IMAX theatrical release, using image boards drawn during production, have been released. Two visuals have been released, one showing Kiki from behind as she looks down on the town on the full moon night of her departure, and the other depicting Kiki with an innocent expression that combines cuteness with an undeniable curiosity and anxiety.
Since its release in 1989, this beloved classic has been revived on IMAX screens as a 4K digital remaster with the highest image quality, supervised by Studio Ghibli. In the 4K digital remaster, even the smallest details of the image will be sharper, making the expressive faces of the protagonist Kiki, the adorable movements of her black cat companion Jiji, the beautiful townscapes, and the exhilarating flying scenes and other action sequences stand out even more. IMAX screenings will allow viewers to enjoy high-definition images and clear sound.
"Kiki's Delivery Service" is based on the children's book of the same name by Eiko Kadono. The story follows Kiki, a cheerful 13-year-old girl, who starts living alone in an unfamiliar town in order to become a full-fledged witch, and uses her ability to fly to work as a "delivery girl." Kiki is voiced by Minami Takayama, Jiji by Rei Sakuma, Osono by Keiko Toda, and Tombo by Kappei Yamaguchi.
