It has been announced that the theatrical version of the short anime "Galaxy Express Milky☆Subway," titled "Galaxy Express Milky☆Subway Local Train to the Theater," will be released in theaters on June 12th as "Extra Service Milky☆Subway Local Train to the Theater," with new scenes added. The theatrical version reconstructs all 12 episodes of the short anime series and adds new scenes, and the "Extra Service" will add even more new scenes. It has also been announced that MX4D and 4DX versions will be screened from June 12th.
The film was released on February 6th and has become a long-running hit, attracting over 410,000 viewers and grossing over 550 million yen.
"Galaxy Express Milky☆Subway" is a sequel to "Milky☆Highway," a short 3D animation released on YouTube in 2022 as a graduation project by Yohei Kameyama, who was a student at a film school at the time. Chiharu, a genetically enhanced human, and Makina, a cyborg, who were arrested for violating the Galactic Road Traffic Act, are tasked with cleaning the interplanetary train "Milky☆Subway" as a community service activity, but become embroiled in a major incident when the train suddenly begins to run out of control.
Its nostalgic visuals and unique, natural dialogue have made it popular, and its total views on YouTube have exceeded 280 million.
