The program "Jūnin Toiro ~Ie ni wa Nure Aru Kazoku no Katachi~" (MBS, Saturdays at 5pm, Kansai local broadcast, etc.), hosted by talent Mifune Mika and actor Taro Suruga, will feature a house that achieves a luxurious European-style world view at a low cost in its April 25th broadcast.
The residents are a family of three, both husband and wife, who are company employees. Four years ago, they built their new home in the suburbs of Tokyo, clad in unusual brown galvalume steel sheets. Stepping through the front door, one is greeted by a spacious area with a 5.6-meter-high atrium, reminiscent of a Spanish patio, and towering bookshelves. An alcove bed, where the wife enjoys reading, is set up in a recess in the wall.
The second floor features a bright dining area overlooking the patio's open atrium. The continuous arches, essential to the courtyard patio, have also been recreated, although the couple reportedly had a heated debate about whether or not to include the columns. The raised living area is divided by a step, creating a sense of depth, and an arched full-length mirror adds visual interest. The house is not particularly large at 17 tsubo (approximately 56 square meters), but by utilizing antique shops and DIY, the couple managed to create a space reminiscent of their beloved European streetscapes at a low cost.
To maintain the European feel, everyday items are all gathered in one place. The shelves and cases in the closet on the first floor are all from Muji. Living in this house, the wife says, "I feel excited and happy every day," and the husband says, "Being able to experience the feeling of traveling abroad while being in everyday life is nourishing for the soul."
"Jūnin Toiro" is a program that visits homes across Japan and introduces the unique features and charms of the homes of their inhabitants. After the broadcast, it is available for streaming on TVer for one week.
