The second chapter of the theatrical anime film series "Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash" (directed by Shuko Murase), titled "Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash: The Witch of Circe," has surpassed 2.5 billion yen in box office revenue in just 48 days since its release on January 30th. The number of viewers has also exceeded 1.48 million.
The first chapter, released in June 2021, grossed approximately 2.23 billion yen, making it an even bigger hit than the first chapter. A short film commemorating the fact that the box office revenue has surpassed 2.5 billion yen has been released on YouTube.
"Hathaway's Flash" is based on a novel published between 1989 and 1990 by director Yoshiyuki Tomino, known as the "creator" of the "Gundam" series. Set in Universal Century 0105, the story follows Hathaway, the son of Bright Noa, who experienced a bitter separation during the Second Neo Zeon War, as he pilots the new mobile suit XI Gundam and rebels against the Earth Federation government. The anime has been announced to consist of three chapters.
The Gundam series films that have surpassed 2 billion yen in box office revenue are the first chapter of "Mobile Suit Hathaway's Flash" (released in 2021), "Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space" (released in 1982), "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom" (released in 2024), and "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-" (released in 2025).
