A new anime series based on Shotaro Ishinomori's popular manga "Cyborg 009," titled "Cyborg 009 Nemesis," is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2026. The new series will feature Nemesis, a group of nine cyborgs who believe that "the 009s cannot lead the world to peace." It has been announced that voice actor Yuichi Nakamura will play Nemesis 009/Graviton, who leads Nemesis. A teaser visual has been released depicting Graviton with his arms outstretched, exuding a cold presence, along with the taglines "I am 009" and "A changing of the guard." A group that appears to be members of Nemesis can be seen in the background.
Graviton is a former special forces soldier from the UK who was severely wounded during a military operation in a war zone and returned home. Since then, he has lived with the goal of "completely eradicating evil." His ability is gravity manipulation.
Regarding his impressions after reading the original work and the script, Nakamura commented, "The opposing forces achieve the justice they believe in in their own way. You could even think that 009 and his group are not so different from Graviton and his group, creating a mirror-like relationship. They are cyborgs, but I think they are very human and interesting."
Regarding Graviton, he said, "He's a cold-hearted character with very strong convictions. He'll stop at nothing to achieve his goals, and he has a rather extreme view that those who are oppressed each have their own reasons, so in terms of structure, he's the villain. However, he's not doing it for pleasure, so it's important to get that balance right."
He sent a message to fans saying, "This is the 009 of the Reiwa era. The 00-numbered characters are all very charming, and I would like even those who have never read the original '009' to check it out. Please check out the charm of this work, which has a certain transience to it."
"Cyborg 009" is a manga that depicts the story of nine warriors, including Joe Shimamura, who are turned into cyborgs by the evil organization Black Ghost, and their fight for justice alongside Dr. Gilmore. The series began serialization in "Weekly Shonen King" (Shonen Gahosha) in 1964 and was also serialized in "Shonen Sunday" (Shogakukan) and "Monthly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha). In 2024, it celebrated its 60th anniversary, and in the same year, it was adapted into a stage play for the first time and remade as a vertical-reading full-color comic.
