He was a genius of the Edo shogunate who became Japan's first envoy to the United States, experienced the civilization of a new era, and designed a new form of nation. However, he was branded a "traitor" by the Meiji government and buried in the shadows of history. This thrilling and heartwarming entertainment depicts the untold exploits of this shogunate official. The script is written by Naoko Adachi , known for her work on dramas such as "What Did You Eat Yesterday?" and the serial television drama " Okaeri Mone ."
The roles of the six new cast members are as follows:
◇Tokugawa Ieyoshi, the 12th Shogun of the Edo Shogunate (Shin Takuma)
After the death of his father, Ienari, who had reigned for many years, he was compelled to rebuild the shogunate, which had been corrupted by bribery. He attempted the Tenpo Reforms, which emphasized discipline and frugality, but failed to quell public opposition. Although he was known as "Sōsei-sama" (Lord Sosei) behind his back for his extremely gentle nature and willingness to accept anything, he had the audacity to appoint the young and intelligent Abe Masahiro, in his twenties, as the chief senior councilor and shift to a system of cooperation with the various daimyo. With the threat of foreign ships looming, he decided to hold the "Imperial Deer Hunt," a major event, for the first time in half a century, in an attempt to once again demonstrate the power of the Tokugawa to the world.
◇ Tokugawa Iesada, the 13th Shogun of the Edo Shogunate (played by Fukawa Ryō)
In the chaotic period immediately following Perry's arrival, Iesada became shogun after the sudden death of his father, Ieyoshi. However, being sickly and introverted, Iesada was rumored to be "unfit to be shogun" and continued to be treated as a figurehead. Furthermore, having no children, the conflict over the succession to the shogunate intensified regardless of his own wishes. It was Ii Naosuke, the lord of the Hikone domain who had spent a long period of hardship, who stood by the lonely Iesada. With numerous domestic and international problems piling up and political struggles escalating, Iesada designated the future Iemochi as his successor and swiftly appointed Ii as Grand Elder.
◇Tokugawa Iemochi, the 14th Shogun of the Edo Shogunate (played by Fuju Kamio)
In the struggle for the shogunate's succession, he became a rival to Tokugawa Yoshinobu, and as a result of the fierce political struggle that unfolded without the involvement of the two, he became shogun at the age of 13. With anti-foreign terrorism rampant and the authority of the shogunate declining, he entered into a political marriage with Princess Kazunomiya, the sister of Emperor Komei. However, the shogunate, which had no choice but to open the country, and the imperial court, which wanted to return to isolation, increasingly diverged in their intentions. Finally, unable to defy the imperial court's demands, he made the first visit to Kyoto by a shogun in 229 years. He and Yoshinobu, who became the shogun's guardian, were held hostage in Kyoto. Oguri and other shogunate officials in Edo planned to use force to rescue the shogun.
◇Senior Councilor Abe Masahiro (played by Takanori Iwata)
Amidst famine and a series of foreign ship arrivals, the lord of Fukuyama Domain in Bingo Province, at the young age of 27, rose to the top position in the shogunate government, becoming the chief senior councilor. Abe cultivated connections with powerful daimyo such as Shimazu Nariakira of Satsuma and appointed Tokugawa Nariaki of Mito, who was skilled in coastal defense, as an advisor, attempting to overcome the national crisis by coordinating with both inside and outside the shogunate. When Perry arrived as predicted by prior intelligence, the situation became urgent, with the challenge being how to quell the panic within the country and avoid war. He created a breakthrough in the shogunate government with a new approach of "listening to everyone's voices," but this was also the prelude to the shogunate's collapse...
◇Minamoto Magistrate Torii Yōzō (played by Kazuki Kitamura)
Oguri was adopted into a branch family of Torii Mototada, the son of Hayashi Jussai, a Confucian scholar of the shogunate, and a loyal retainer of Ieyasu who died in battle. He rose through the ranks, taking pride in his loyalty to the Tokugawa family. The young Oguri, upon his first visit to the castle, admired Torii's example. During the Tenpo Reforms, he strictly controlled the city as the Southern Magistrate, and was known as a ruthless "monster" for his willingness to use any means necessary if he deemed someone harmful to the shogunate. He was wary of Western ideas as something that would shake the Tokugawa order, and he considered the reformist faction, including Oguri's teacher, Asaka Konsai, a Confucian scholar who was well-versed in Western affairs, as his nemesis.
◇Nariaki Tokugawa, the 9th Lord of the Mito Domain (played by Akira Emoto)
The 9th lord of the Mito domain, one of the three Tokugawa branch families, who was revered as "Lord" even after his retirement. At first glance, he seemed like a friendly and kind old man, but he was a shrewd strategist worthy of his nickname "Lord of the Fierce Strategy." He gained the trust of the young Senior Councilor Abe and became involved in the shogunate's coastal defense policy, while also cooperating with the imperial court and powerful domains to ensure that his son, Yoshinobu, would become the shogun. When Japan was pressured to open its doors to the world, he strongly advocated for "expelling foreigners," which led to a conflict with the pro-opening Ii Naosuke and ultimately his removal from power.
