"Our Little Sister" is based on the manga of the same name by Akimi Yoshida, which was serialized in the shojo manga magazine "Monthly Flowers" (Shogakukan) from 2006 to 2018. It was an official selection in the competition section of the 68th Cannes International Film Festival and won four awards at the 39th Japan Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
On a bright summer morning, the three sisters living in Kamakura receive news of their father's death. Fifteen years ago, their father abandoned his family, and later their mother (Shinobu Otake) remarried and left home as well. At their father's funeral, the three sisters meet their half-sister, Suzu (Hirose). Suzu's mother, who took their father away, has already passed away, and seeing Suzu, a middle school student, bravely supporting her unreliable stepmother, the eldest sister, Sachi (Haruka Ayase), impulsively asks her, "Why don't you come live with us in Kamakura?"
The responsible Sachi and the free-spirited second daughter Yoshino (Nagasawa) often clash, while the youngest daughter Chika (Kaho) lives life at her own pace. Suzu joins the lives of these three sisters. They gather around the table to enjoy seasonal meals and share their worries and joys. However, when their mother, who had been out of contact, reappears at their grandmother's seventh death anniversary, the hidden thorns in the hearts of the four sisters begin to surface in their seemingly peaceful daily lives...
