Eiji Tsuburaya, the founder of Tsuburaya Productions and known as the "God of Special Effects," will be featured in the program "Heroes' Choices," airing on NHK BS on April 6th at 9 PM. The program will explore his turbulent early life, from gaining fame through national policy war films to being ostracized from the film industry after the war due to his own exploits.
"Heroes' Choices" shines a spotlight on heroes who made decisions that dramatically changed history. The subtitle for this episode is "Eiji Tsuburaya: The 'God of Special Effects' Created by His Era." In the early Showa era, when period dramas were the mainstream, Eiji Tsuburaya's special effects skills suddenly came into the spotlight thanks to national propaganda films aimed at boosting morale. However, his success backfired, and after the war, he was purged from public office. His new attempt at a comeback was also thwarted by a major disaster. What was the first half of his life like, constantly tossed about by the times...?
The program will also feature director Shinji Higuchi, known for films such as "Shin Godzilla" (2016), as a guest. Higuchi will share the "choice" that Eiji Tsuburaya was faced with before the production of "Godzilla," a decision that he found deeply troublesome.
